Week 5 : Composition in Photography

Image composition describes how different subjects and visual elements are arranged inside of the image frame. The purpose of image composition is to create a visually compelling picture, a picture that evokes the interest of the viewer.

a. Simplicity
The saying "less is more" is often true in image composition. The photo is often more beautiful and effective if unnecessary elements are left out of the frame.

b. The Rule of Thirds
Rule of thirds suggests to place the subject off the center. According to rule of thirds the picture frame is mentally divided in to three parts horizontally and vertically as in the picture.

c. Lines
Lines can be powerful elements in an image. They have the power to draw the eye to key focal points in a shot and to impact the ‘feel’ of an image greatly.

d. Balance
Balance the 'weight' of your subject by including another object of lesser importance to fill the space.

e. Framing
Frames can be used to emphasize subject in the photograph. Important subject of the photo can be emphasized by surrounding it with some other element.
